Comparison of four determination methods of Alum content in jellyfish product

  • Aluminum exists as a form of alum in jellyfish products. The accumulated aluminum in human body by consuming jellyfish products will do harm to health. Current determination methods of alum (aluminum) content in jellyfish differ in operation and detection sensitivity. Boiled-titration method (BTM), acid boiled-titration method (ABTM), colorimetric method (CM) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AASM) were the methods commonly used. The pretreatment, accuracy and precision, operability of these four methods were compared in this paper. The results showed that ABTM took 6 min for pretreatment, which was similar with AASM results. The recovery rates of ABTM, CM and AASM ranged from 103.81% to 107.60% with an average of 104.70%, which met the analytical requirements. In conclusion, with a comparison of different methods, ABTM is easy to operate but costs less, which is suitable for the daily tests of factories and testing organizations.
